What is it?

It is called a "chaotic strange attractor." It comes right out of Chaos...out of seeming randomness.

How does a chaotic strange attractor come to be? You begin with random numbers. Plug them into a non-linear equation. Plot the results graphically. At first, you just get obviously random, "chaotic" results. Keep at it. After millions of iterations (computers help!): Voila! An elegant, beautifully-ordered chaotic strange attractor.

How or why does this happen?

It's essentially still a mystery. The "new scientists" describe it like this: Seemingly random, unpredictable events evolve in complex symmetry by the power of the boundary setting "chaotic strange attractor" inherent in the system in which the events take place. Within the natural order itself, "something" shapes the seeming chaos toward beautiful symmetry and order.

Fractals, chaotic strange attractors, and many other phenomena from contemporary science, confirm what the ancients knew intuitively—that Chaos begets Order. Better said, Order is inherent in Chaos. Over time, Order emerges in beautiful, surprising and unpredictable ways.
