Theodore G. Ryan, Ph.D.

For over 25 years, Theodore G. Ryan, Ph.D., has been a consultant in leadership development and organizational transformation. Ted has been privileged to consult with some of the finest organizations in the world, including: Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting), American Museum of Natural History, Banc of America Securities, Bank of America, Bankers Trust, Bristol Myers-Squibb, Central Park Conservancy, Chase (now JPMorgan Chase), Chemical Bank, Classroom, Inc., Communities in Schools, Deutsche Bank, Dun & Bradstreet, Federal Reserve Bank NY, First Union Bank, Freeport-McMoRan, General Electric, Getty Oil, Lehman Brothers, Lehrer/McGovern, McGraw Hill, Merrill Lynch, Mastercard International, Morgan Stanley, National Reinsurance, National Westminster Bank USA, The New York Times, PepsiCo, PNC Bank, Prudential Financial, R-M Trust Company, Standard & Poor's, Swiss Bank, Tiger Management L.L.C., The Travelers Companies, The U.S. State Department (Foreign Service Board), Warner-Lambert and Young & Rubicam.

With leadership as an underlying theme, Ted has focused on organizational transformation, leadership and management development, executive coaching and assessment, aligning corporate culture, 360 performance evaluation, building management teams, and recruitment and selection.

At Chase, Ted consulted to senior management on incorporating its vision, mission and strategy into its culture and mainstream management processes. He worked with Chase's Corporate Marketing and Communications Head to build a "best in class" Employee Communication capability. Ted helped the senior managements at Deutsche Bank and Banc of America Securities integrate their corporate and investment banking platforms and build the required organizational infrastructure and culture for investment banking.

Ted has extensive experience in creating and delivering management and leadership development programs. At Morgan Stanley, Ted created and conducted a series of offsite Leadership Seminars for all officers in the administrative, auditing, finance, human resources, legal, operations and systems areas. Ted helped deliver Bank of America's executive leadership program to its top executives. At Mastercard International, Ted developed and delivered a series of customized Performance Management Workshops. At Chase, Ted developed and delivered programs for managing the auditor-auditee relationship. He was the principal consultant, designer and trainer in installing 360 performance evaluation processes for corporate and investment banks such as Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and Banc of America Securities.

Ted is an experienced executive coach, having coached managers and executives at American Museum of Natural History, Banc of America Securities, Chase, Central Park Conservancy, Classroom, Inc., Deutsche Bank, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Tiger Management and elsewhere. At Tiger, Ted also provided career and management assessment.

Recruitment/selection represent another of Ted's professional specialties. Ted has helped create and build hiring processes at such leading firms as Bankers Trust, Chase, Chemical Bank, Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley PNC Bank and Tiger Management. For over 20 years, Ted and his associates trained Chase's line and human resources professionals in how to select professional employees, using highly customized programs grounded in Ted's proprietary Select for Success program. Ted has designed business case interviews and other specialized interviews to assess such characteristics as analytical skills, creative problem-solving and collaboration skills. Ted delivered courses in the U.S., Latin America, Europe and Asia. At Merrill Lynch, Ted helped develop Merrill's Financial Consultant Selection System, and for over 20 years was the primary trainer of Merrill's managers on how to recruit and select financial consultants. He developed a program for incorporating the Merrill Lynch Principles into Merrill's recruiting and hiring practices. At Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting), Ted helped create and enhance the partner and MBA recruitment and selection processes, through the development of special business case interviews, video interviews and the delivery of intensive coaching to Accenture recruiters throughout the U.S. At the U.S. Department of State, Ted conducted selection training for the Board of Examiners (which selects Foreign Service Officers) and consulted on their "oral examination".

At the U.S. Department of Defense, Army Research Institute, Ted was a senior member of a team from Columbia University that designed and developed a pioneering on-line computerized career planning and development system for Army officers.

Ted has taught at the secondary school (Northfield Mount Hermon School), college (Marymount Manhattan College) and graduate school (Teachers College, Columbia U.) levels. Ted is an Adjunct Professor at Fuqua, Duke University's business school, teaching business ethics and leadership in the MBA program. He also serves as senior adjunct faculty for The Leadership Trust, in Durham, NC. Ted created and taught a course, The Ethics of Leadership, at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. Ted is a Senior Coach and Consultant for EXCN, the Executive Coaching Network.

Ted earned his Ph.D. in Counseling/Organizational Psychology, at Columbia University, his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and his B.A. from Wheaton College (Ill.). He also studied in the Ph.D. program in Religion at Princeton University.

Ted's personal activities include sports (baseball, basketball, tennis, hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing), motorcycling, music, reading, writing a children's book, leading retreats, and spending as much time as possible with his family.
